Acne101: Forbidden secrets they don’t tell you!

My journey with acne is rather a rocky one. When I started getting pimples in my teens, I suddenly got very image conscious and hated getting my pictures taken. I would often get bangs to cover up my forehead, experimented with way too many over-the-counter medications, tried all sorts of home remedies and even consulted a bunch of dermatologists. In all these years of trial and error, I can say I know what works. And by that, I mean what REALLY REALLY works!

In today’s day and age, the first source of information is but obviously the internet. The multitudes of options often baffle us and we end up getting confused about what to do. So, here’s me, making it easy for you! Dealing with pimples has never been easier!

1.   Understanding your acne

Having acne can altogether be a very overwhelming experience. But, if you can narrow it down to the causes, it helps you deal with it more efficiently! Here’s how you can know the cause of your pimples.

Why do we have acne?

We’ve been told a thousand times over, acne is caused because sebum and dead cells clog pores and cause local infection. I realized there’s more to it. They sure are the basic building blocks but there’s more than what meets the eye. Read ahead to find out more.

Face Mapping

Face mapping is a Chinese practice of co-relating the occurrence of your acne to a specific body part. The ancient science implies that the pimples on your face is an indication to a deeper-rooted problem in your body. Tending to the organ your acne position is linked to, results directly in having better skin! Refer to this face mapping chart and see what the causes are!

What is your acne type?

The treatment of acne is highly determined by what kind it is. Acne is broadly classified into 2 categories, Inflammatory and non-Inflammatory.

The non-inflammatory acne like blackheads and whiteheads do not cause swelling and are comparatively easier to deal with. Using a salicylic acid based faced wash dramatically helps!

Inflammatory acne on the other hand are what we are usually worried about, because they redden the face, are very painful and results in acne scars. Papules and postules are the kind of acne that redden and cause a bump, only postules are filled with pus. On the other hand, nodules and cysts are the most sever form of acne, as they are deeper within the skin and form larger, more irritable bumps. It is wise to consult a dermatologist and start treatment at the earliest for this.

Is my acne hormonal?

Hormones and blemishes have a very close relationship. When you disturb the hormones, acne turns up with a baseball bat (just kidding! It just seeks revenge on your skin!). hormonal ones can easily be spotted if there is a certain pattern they appear in. In a study for acne symptoms around menstruation, 56% of women reported acne flare up just before their periods. The way to deal with this is to regulate your hormones by consulting a doctor for the hormonal balancing medication.

2.   What basic skin care should I practice?

I cannot stress enough on how important it is to have a daily skin routine!!! Your acne treatment heavily depends on how well you Cleanse, Tone and Moisturize! Make sure that you follow the CTM routine at least twice a day! Indulge in a good oil-free face wash, toner and a non-comedogenic moisturizer. I use hydrogen peroxide additionally, but please consult your doc before using it. Incorporate periodical exfoliation into your routine to make sure you get rid of those dead cells!

3.   Diet for acne-prone skin

The skin is a reflection of your gut. An unhealthy gut is a result of poor dietary choices. Eating right is key to dealing with acne at the root level. A balanced diet that includes nutrients like zinc, Vit-A and E, Omega 3 fatty acids and antioxidants will ensure you have better skin. Studies have been conducted to establish a connection between dairy and sugar and acne. But none have gathered strong evidence regarding the same. On a personal note, I avoid sugar since I feel my skin is better when I do so. I do indulge in my once-in-while donuts to satiate my cravings.
