Political Activities

Kim Kardashian West is immensely proud of her Scottish and Armenian heritage, although she does not speak Armenian. She has long advocated for historical significance and recognition of the Armenian Genocide, even encouraging to consider it’s acknowledgement during Obama’s tenure.

She visited Armenia and even vocally expressed her contention against an advertisement in The Wall Street Journal that denied the Genocide. She identified as a Democrat during a GQ interview in July 2016, declaring support for presidential candidate Hilary Clinton in the 2016 Election. In the recent Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Kim extended her support to Armenia and the Republic of Artsakh.

Kim is lauded for her extensive work in prison reform and justice lobbying. Notably, she helped in commutation of sentences of Chris Young and Alice Marie Johnson. For the latter, who was a leader of a major cocaine ring, Kim worked alongside President Donald Trump in ensuring a life sentence.

She has been instrumental in getting the First Step Bill passed- a highly functional prison reform Bill. She campaigned for the Bill vigorously with Van Jones and Jared Kushner, securing President Trump’s support in expediting the Bill. Van Jones credited Kim with the successful passing of the Bill, saying it would not have happened without her efforts in getting President Trump on Board.

The Bill was passed in the Senate with a great majority. The First Step Act enacted magnanimous reforms in the US prison system, setting a standard for federal law and order structures worldwide.

The 90 Days to Freedom campaign by attorneys Brittany K Barnett and Mi Angel Cody was greatly funded by Kim in 2019. It was an initiative working to acquit non-violent drug offenders from life sentences. Her contribution in the initiative as well as her advocacy in the First Step Act helped in the release of 17 citizens. She received praise for her efforts but also had several critics who accused her of grabbing attention.

However, advocate Barnett extended solidarity by expressing gratitude, saying Kim “linked arms with us to support us”.

Her tweet in 2017, which went viral, expressed concern over gun violence in the United States. The statistics table showed that while gun violence killed more than 10,000 people every year, terrorism killed 14. The table was awarded “International Statistic of the Year” (2017) in 2018 by the World Economic Forum.

The Kardashian family has been embroiled in controversies more times than can be counted. Kim is no less in having her own share of controversies.

  1. Upon the release of promotional photographs for her KKW Beauty line, Kim was accused of ‘blackface’ and subsequent racism. In defense to what was told by some as deliberate darkening of her face and heavy editing, Kim claimed that she was “really tan” at the time. She even apologized saying she never intended to offend anybody and understood their contentions.

  1. Kim Kardashian sparked tremendous outrage when a picture of her as Virgin Mary emerged. She was slammed for this ‘kimoji’, in which the star had superimposed her face on that of Mary. This was seen as disrespectful to the religion and several believers of the faith reproached her, terming her actions as condemn-able and disgusting.

  1. Kim got into yet another row, this time for cultural appropriation, when she announced her shape wear brand, which she had initially planned to name ‘Kimono’. The usage of the name was condemned by several people, for the kimono garment is a culturally significant artifact with a lot of heritage value. The backlash was so severe that the Mayor of Kyoto wrote an open letter explaining the significance of the garment. Kim later on changed the name of the shape wear brand to Skims, and apologized for the ignorance.

  1. While in Paris for Fashion Week in 2016, Kim was the victim of a robbery at the apartment in which she was staying. She was held at gunpoint, bound and gagged by five individuals dressed as police officers, while they stole about 10 million worth of her jewelry. Kim was rescued in that state, but was physically unharmed. The robbery has also been slammed by several critics as being staged. The skepticism has been paralleled to Olympian Ryan Lochte’s recent false robbery claim.
